At this sanctuary, spread out below the wooded hill of the Kronion, along the banks of the Alfeios River, thousands of athletes gathered every four years to participate in the Olympic
Games. They were joined by philosophers, poets, musicians, politicians, and ordinary citizens. The first recorded
games were held in 776 B.C. The victors' prize was neither gold nor other material wealth. It was a
wreath of wild-olive branches. A young boy was given a pair of golden scissors to cut as many olive branches as there were contests. To this day, so many ages later, the Olympic
Torch, symbol of peaceful
competition, love and world friendship, is still lighted here by sunlight during a touching ceremony.
